Arsenal defeated Wolves 2-0 at the Emirates Stadium this afternoon. It was a solid and assured performance from the Gunners which in all honesty could of been 5 or 6 nil. Arsenal created chance after chance but were mainly denied by the excellent Wolves keeper Hennessey. Robin Van Persie scored the two goals to secure victory and was unlucky not to get another hat trick. A major plus point for Arsenal was that nobody got injured and Johan Djourou played all 90 minutes proving he is ready to line up against Barcelona on Wednesday.
Arsenal started the game brightly despite the random hailstones falling at the Emirates. We looked assured in possession with Jack Wilshere and Cesc Fabregas dominating the game in the middle of the park. Wilshere himself nearly got through on goal but was fouled by Berra. This resulted in Van Persie blasting a free kick over. However In the 16th minute Robin Van Persie scored an excellent volley after a clever pass from the captain Fabregas. This had been coming from the start of the match as Arsenal could have easily been two goals up by this point. The Arsenal midfield continued to dominate and the Arsenal defence weren't being caused any problems by Wolverhampton Wanderers. Arsenal should really have increased the lead in the first half but it wasn't to be after some great last ditch defending from Wolves and some poor finishing from the Arsenal.
Once again Arsenal went in at half time looking in control, and the players must of been confident of securing the victory. This however was the exact position we were in last week and we all know what happened then. Today though we had Johan Djourou and Alex Song playing the whole 90 minutes. This made a huge difference as we look a far better team with the duo in the side and on form. Arsenal continued to dominate and Van Persie scored a second in the 56th minute. Fabregas once again created the goal with a brilliant pass to Theo who stormed through and gave Robin an easy chance to put Arsenal two goals up. The flying Dutchman finished easily with a powerful left footed strike. Arsene is obviously well aware we are playing Barcelona on Wednesday. Due to the dominating position we were in he managed to rest Robin Van Persie and Andrey Arshavin and subbed them off in the 72th minute replacing them with Nicklas Bendtner and Marouane Chamakh. Later on in 77th minute Wilshere was taken off for Denilson after a great performance from the England international. The rest of the game didn't really contain any exciting moments apart from when Theo should have scored a third for the gunners.
All in all a strong performance from Arsenal once again showing their title credentials. We looked strong in defence and strong going forward with Van Persie playing superbly again. If we can repeat this performance against Barcelona on Wednesday, we will be in with a good chance of beating them and let's hope we can.
